"Madame Jumel" was born Betsey Bowen in 1775 in Rhode Island to a prostitute mother and was sent to a workhouse as a young girl. She vowed early on to escape her pitiful circumstances and, blessed with beauty and ambition, made her way to New York, where she changed her name and married a wealthy Frenchman. She later was briefly married to Vice President Burr. Although she was never accepted in polite society, the home which she and her husband purchased in Manhattan is now a museum known as the Morris-Jumel Mansion.
