A rare piece of American majolica: Wannopee Pottery lettuce leaf "square" bowl measuring approximately 7 1/2" x 7", 3 1/8" at its highest. There are no chips or cracks, but there are 3 very faint hairlines as shown in the photos, the longest being 1 1/4". The bowl is beautifully shaped and the color is fantastic.

The New Milford Pottery was founded in 1897 in New Milford, Conn, by Lewis Curtis and William Black. They began producing majolica in 1888. The company struggled financially and was liquidated in 1892, then reorganized under the name Wannopee. Lettuce Leaf wares began production in 1893, and a full dinner service was produced in this lightweight form, made by overlapping leaves of clay. In 1904, despite the success of the Lettuce line, the company failed again. Some of the molds were taken to the George Bowman Company of Trenton, New Jersey, and those wares made from the Wannopee molds bear the Lettuce Leaf mark. Wannopee was the last American company to produce majolica.
