19th Century Johann Maresch Majolica Sunflower Vase

The Johann Maresch pottery began in 1841 in Aussig, Bohemia. They initially produced terra cotta wares and in the second half of the 19th century were known for their fine tobacco jars and smoke sets. During this period, they were also known to produce limited quantities of high quality majolica.

This lovely and rare Maresch vase is of excellent proportion, standing 10 3/4" tall. It has a crimped rim, elegant neck, and gently tapering center with deep flutes. The base is decorated with molded and applied sunflowers and leaves, adding a sunny and whimsical spirit to the elegant design. The glaze begins at the top in a peach color and subtly changes to a warm and then deep green as it descends to the base. The interior of the vase is pale green.

The vase is in excellent condition with no chips or cracks. There are a few small flakes at the tips of the sunflowers as pictured and expected with age. The base is impressed with the Johann Maresch mark as shown. A beautiful example of European majolica.
