Wonderful pair of antique eyeglasses! These frames are fashioned in 14K white gold with round lenses and even have extra magnification at the bottom with small circular bifocal type addition. Oxford frames were invented by a professor at Oxford University, England in the late 1800's when he added nosepieces to the pince nez for additional fit and comfort. They became so popular that they were quickly adopted by many optical manufacturers. The most common form was the modified lorgnette version, which this pair is--they hang from a Y shaped sterling silver detachable neck chain. The glasses are marked 14K and "The Hutter" with "Oxford" beneath on the bridge, and the nose pieces are marked "White Gold". The nose pieces have an attractive beaded pattern on the outside. The chain is marked sterling on the clasps. The chain is approximately 25" long to the shield where the sides of the Y meet, and the single drop is approximately 4 1/2", which gives an overall drop of 17 1/2". The original red leather case is included. It's marked "Felden & Kienle Opticians 27 So. 19th St. Phila." on one side. All pieces are in excellent condition, with no scratches to the lenses. A complete original set in this condition is hard to find. If you're looking for an alternative to heavy opera glasses or you've reached the age when a bit of assistance reading fine print is necessary, these would fit the bill and be stylishly elegant as well--sure beats the $12 pairs from the drugstore!
