A stunning emerald green whale oil lamp standing 10 7/8" tall to the top of the metal collar. The upper portion of the font appears to be blown, while the body is pressed in a 3 part mold. The font is fluted while the neck of the 6 sided base is paneled. The upper portion of the font is engraved with a floral motif, while the base is engraved with lines and ovals. It is in perfect condition. Any specks seen in the close up photo of the font are dust particles inside the font, which we have not attempted to clean. We do see a few black specks in the glass that are likely ash that was trapped during manufacture, and the glass in the upper portion of the font is a bit wavy. Whale oil lamps typically date from the 1830's to 1860's by the Boston and Sandwich, New England Glass, or Mt. Washington Glass companies, and green examples are quite rare. This one is a beauty.

Provenance: From the estate of a Charleston, SC "S.O.B,"--an abbreviation locals use to describe those who live "South of Broad". Broad Street in Charleston is the dividing line used to distinguish the merely wealthy from historied "old money" families who reside in the fabulous homes located in Charleston's most historic area in and around The Battery, overlooking Charleston harbor.
