A stunning late 1800's epergne or trumpet vase standing just over 13" tall. The scalloped and ruffled rim is a rich pink or light cranberry, and the glass shades from cranberry pink at the top to a blue-gray at the base (somewhat darker in person that the photos indicate). The front is hand painted with what we believe is either a peony or chrysanthemum front-and-center, and surrounded with gilt enamel and additional enamel work on the flowers and leaves.
The vase has two condition problems: first is a 1/8" top flake on a ruffle edge that shows as white in the photo. Second is a small chip on one of the ruffles, approx. 1/8" x 1/8"--it is hardly noticeable and is near the rear of the vase, almost hidden by the higher ruffle above it. I have to search for it each time I look at this beautiful piece. Both flaws are pictured. There may have been gilt trim to the ruffle but it is worn and was so fine that it doesn't affect the look of the piece.
We believe that this piece is Bristol glass, likely Bohemian in origin, and dates to the 1880's, the height of production of these Victorian glass wonders. We have priced it to reflect the minor damage.
