SOLD Hawkes Steuben Verre De Soie Engraved Glass Vase, Sterling Rim
A magnificent example of the collaboration of T. G. Hawkes and Frederic Carder of Steuben Glass Works is this beautiful tall cylinder vase with sterling silver rim and engraved floral and swag decoration. The finish to the glass is called "Verre de Soie", romantically named by Carder and commonly translated as "Glass of Silk". The Verre de Soie technique was introduced by Carder in his early years at Steuben, which had been founded by Hawkes to insure a steady supply of quality blanks for his factory. The finish is achieved by spraying almost molten glass with stannous chloride, which produces a most delicate rainbow hued iridescence and softness. Carder maintained that this was his favorite glass--quite an accolade from the man who developed so many exquisite glass creations.
This elegant antique glass vase of the American Brilliant Period stands 9 7/8" tall, with the sterling rim being 3/4". The vase diameter is 3 3/4". It is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, or damage and appropriate shelf wear to the base. The glass engraving is masterful. The sterling rim is accented with a band of laurel and egg swags and is marked "Hawkes Sterling 2262". There are a few pinpoint dings to the sterling as would be expected given the softness of sterling and the age of the piece. The base has the trademark Steuben ground and polished pontil and is faintly marked "Hawkes" as pictured.
