A rare antique American pottery Lily Pad or Pond Lily plate made by the Avalon Faience Company of Baltimore, Maryland between 1882-1884. Avalon Faience produced what is popularly called "white majolica" as they used only one to three colors in their decoration and tin glazes. This platter has relief molded lilypad leaves with center flower with green and gold veining on the leaves and flower. The charger measures 11 1/4" in diameter. It is in very condition with overall fine crazing and trim color loss, one graze on the back foot rim as pictured. It is clearly marked with the Avalon Faience Balt [Baltimore] mark on the bottom as shown; Avalon was part of the Chesapeake Pottery Company. A great piece for the antique American pottery collector.
The Chesapeake Pottery Company was founded in 1880 in Baltimore and became D. F. Haynes & Co. in 1882, using the Avalon Faience mark on their fine majolica wares from 1882 - 1884. From 1880 - 1895, it was Haynes, Bennett & Co, the firm that produced the wonderful syrup pitchers. After 1895, the firm was called D. F. Haynes & Son, and ceased production in 1914.
