This stunning 8 1/4" tall pitcher was made by the US Glass Company circa 1895. The pattern is called "Diamond Swirl" or "Zippered Swirl and Diamond". The twisted applied handle and diamond pattern with large rayed base is positively beautiful. There are some condition issues with this piece--some fleabites or roughness to the base rim (these do not show when the pitcher is upright), a few pinpoint (very tiny) "bings) to some of the diamond points near the bottom, and a 3/4" smooth slice where the underside of the top portion of the handle is attached to the body--we believe this is part of manufacture. Additionally, there is some dirt between the handle and the body of the pitcher--we have examined this with a jeweler's loupe and do not see any evidence of a crack and believe there was likely a small amount of dirt trapped when the handle was originally applied which has darkened over time. This does not show when the pitcher is displayed from the side, and collectors will recognize that early American pressed or pattern glass was not held to strict manufacturing standards. Fluoresces yellow under blacklight, attesting to its age. Felt dots on the base have been removed since taking the photos. A really beautiful piece of antique American glass.
