A wonderful antique Staffordshire earthenware plate having a cream color with mocha brown fruit and floral designs surround a center landscape of English country cottage with figures and animals. Measures 10 1/4" in diameter and has no chips, cracks, or crazing. There is wear along the rim as can be expected with age, and about 1" has darkening. The reverse is marked in brown with a swan and banner with name "Alton" and underneath the initials "J B" and a British Registry mark dating this plate to 1887. Kovels attributes this mark to Rathbone; however, Rathbone was not in business in 1887, and our research indicates the initials "J B" are either James Beech of Tunstall/Burslem or J & M P Bell and Co. of Glasgow, Scotland.
