Rare Bakelite Cherry Red Domed Intaglio of Capitol, D.C. Brooch

This is just one of the most fabulous pieces of Bakelite that I have come across! The beautiful cherry red bakelite (it has been tested) surrounds a clear domed detailed intaglio depiction of the U.S. Capitol building complete with flying flag and lawn. The detail on this is pretty remarkable.

The bakelite has a "stepped" design carved into the sides. I do not know the composition of the dome or the material of the art work inside it. If you hold the piece just right or look with a magnifier, you can see a hair line scratch or crack at about "1 o'clock" under the dome. It is smooth to the touch so I believe it may be on the actual art work itself. It does not detract from this and you have to really look for it to find it.

This measures 1.5 inches in diameter and has a safety swivel pin closure on the back.
