For your consideration, I am pleased to present a most rare and exquisite Royal Doulton cabinet plate ca. 1937. The background is a creamy white with a lovely not quite cobalt blue. There is a central floral spray of English flowers. The most rare thing about this plate is that it is an example of "Icinea" which is a technique of laying lace over the ware and painting through it. During the firing, the lace burns off and leaves the design in gilt. The effect is ephemeral and I do wish the photos would show it better. This is one of the most gorgeous plates I've ever owned.

It was initially difficult to date this plate. Most standard books do not show this exact mark. However, an expert was called on for assistance and while one doesn't often see the "Made in England" on Royal Doulton, it definitely does exist and is not a forgery as I had feared. So, if you cannot find this mark in your book, rest assured that I have consulted an expert before putting this in my shop.

The back of the plate is marked "Royal Doulton Made in England", and it has a number "10" off the right side of the bottom of the crown. You use this to date this plate by adding 27 to it--thus, this plate was made in 1937. Another tip I learned from the expert! This lovely piece measures 10.5 inches in diameter. There are no chips, cracks or crazing and no visible wear to the gilding.

A truly fine example of why Royal Doulton has remained at the top of the heap in English porcelain and China for so very long. Don't let this rare opportunity pass for you to own something quite special to add to your collection.
