Sizzling Hot Summer Sale! New Reductions Taken on Many Items!
The background is a deep rich brown with two separate cream colored vases with stylized poppies and leaves in each. The back of the vase also has a floral theme in red and green. There is very little applied gilt on this piece, just the handles, and no moriage beading. There is a dividing line painted between the two front images that has been built up with paint and has a light touch of gilt that is somewhat worn.
This vase has a lot of presence and stands 16 inches high, is 24 inches in circumference at its widest and the mouth has a 5.75 inch diameter opening. Someone had drilled this vase to use for a lamp. I actually purchased it as such because I recognized the quality of the Nippon piece. However, the manufacturer's mark, Royal Nippon (green globe) is still discernable and it is also marked "hand painted" in blue, typical of that manufacturer. There are also numbers as shown in the photos. There is some normal wear to the paint that is typical of its age but there are no chips, cracks or crazing.
Really a lovely and unusual piece for collectors of Nippon, or for someone who wants an antique vase that has a lot of presence and size.
