Created of huge hewn stones, the Wailing Wall is the last wall standing from King Herod's Temple that he built prior to the time of Christ. That Temple was destroyed in 70 A.D. by the Romans, and this wall is all that is left and a holy site to both Jews and Christians alike. When the sun hits it just right, the stones seem to almost glow. The artist captured that beautifully. Although Israel was created as a nation in 1948, the Jews did not have access to the Wailing Wall until after the 1967 war. I would date this painting post 1967 because of that, although today, and for the last years Jews are rarely allowed to gather or pray at the Wall due to an agreement with the PLO.
When you could visit the wall, both Christians and Jews alike were welcome there pre-agreement, it was a tradition to write down a prayer on a piece of paper and place it in one of the cracks between the stones. It was quite something to see all those tiny pieces of paper wedged into those huge stones. A special place, and a special painting. Overall condition of the piece is very good.
