The bag has several hallmarks, including the English lion, denoting Sheffield, the crown indicating it is 925 silver and a "J" indicating the year of manufacture, 1876--this is all to the best of my research and knowledge. There are two maker's marks that I have not been able to identify and they won't photograph as they are about the size of a pin head.
The bag has had two repairs in the past that I can tell: one of the "kiss" closures has been resoldered or replaced, the other is near the hinge. Neither of these in any way detract from the beauty of this gorgeous bag. The fabric on the bag may be suede leather, it feels like suede and is very thick as one can tell by looking at the seam on the side. It is in very good condition. The interior of the bag appears to be a silk moire which is, as typical, somewhat stained and shows signs of wear but is completely intact.
The inside of the frame has an inscription "Klarekunak, 1909, jul 20, with what appears to be "Karon." The engraving is faint and hard to read. What I find interesting about this is that perhaps this bag has been gifted more than once, based on the "J" date of 1876.
The frame measures 6 inches long and is 2 inches at its widest. It is 8 inches from the top of the frame to the bottom of the bag, and 12.5 inches from the top of the wrist chain to the bottom of the bag.
I have not cleaned this bag. It is as found and the photos simply don't do it justice. This is a bag for a true collector, rare and very old with hand made artistry.
