This is a wonderful ivory cameo of Napoleon. The carving was made in 19th century France from a thick ivory plaque. Napoleon is depicted in profile, wearing his uniform and his various medals. His face, hair, and outfit were carved with the highest attention paid to detail, obviously by an experienced hand. The carving is clear and crisp, yet soft. It was done in high relief, with 1/2 in. thickness. After so many years, the ivory has gained a wonderful creamy patina. What is very unique to this piece is the fact that the artist decided to carve the emperor without pupils, perhaps an a tribute to the classics. A large, prime example of deep cameo carving.
