ANTIQUE ROYALTY Anglo Indian Carved Ivory Figural Maharajah Carriage Procession
Antiques : Decorative Arts
This is a wonderful carving of an Indian Maharajah's (king) procession. The piece was made entirely out of ivory in the early to mid 19th century. It was hand made by a master carver in a small shop and sent to Britain to be sold to the rich aristocrats. It depicts the Maharajah and his son, under a canopy, on top of a royal elephant. The elephant is adorned in rich tapestries and jewels, guided by the caravan driver. They are protected by six soldiers dressed in traditional robes. The piece sits on the original solid ivory base with ivory feet and pierced ivory fringes, or skirts, on the sides of the base. There is a total of nine people in the figurine! A spectacular piece, a treat for the eyes!
Condition: Great condition! Two of the six fringes that hang underneath the base are replacements. Tiny loss to the corner of the smaller canopy (that is above the driver's head). It is very hard to find an example like this in such good, original condition!
Measurements: A large 7 in. long x 2 in. wide x 6 1/4 in. tall.
