each plate is double marked with the haviland marks #12 the underglaze in green ca. 1894-1931 and #13 ca.1876-1878, 1889--1931 the overglaze in red ...it also has "hand painted" on the back as well...in Gaston's encycopedia on pg. 207 she has valued Berton's work....in the year 2000.... between $375 and $ 425...and these meticulously created works only continue to appreciate...
The Haviland factory began producing porcelain in 1865...haviland realized how superior hard paste porcelain was to earthenware which led to him opening his own exporting and decorating studios....with his own artists...Berton being one of them...Haviland not only was a well known name but eventually became a quality.... ...their name and quality they stood for became well known thruout America and France...not only was haviland helpful in opening up the American market but they were instrumental in introducing new methods of technology for production and decoration which were superior to those previously used
With the discovery of Kaolin in 1768 France ,by 1820 Limoges had become the producer of the finest hard paste porcelain in the world. When a piece of true Antique Limoges French porcelain is purchased the porcelain itself is also of great value. ... the unique ingredients that make the hardpaste and the individual firing process of each Limoges creates the most exquisite translucency whereby light can pass thru and one can often see even their fingertips....when the glaze is applied during the second firing process the glass like nature of the glaze forms and now the glaze and the object(the Limoges) actually fuses into one piece....it is this very unique quality of the Limoges hard paste porcelain that helps to create it's value....as the decades and centuries pass the Limoges will not become crazed...as is often the case when an object is not Limoges....Limoges has not only become sought after by collectors for their art work but for the porcelain quality itself.
You can be assured of the quality and value behind the pieces we offer....i am not an authority but try and research as much as i can about each individual piece offered....we strive to bring pieces that will be wise investments...part of art history and above all allowing for the appreciation of the individual beauty of every creation....the rest, is up to you..!!.... :-)
