Hand Colored Engraving Succulent 1836
Information
This is a beautiful copperplate hand colored engraving on hand laid paper from Pancrace Bessa's FLORE DES JARDINIERS (Flowers of the Gardener) published 1836, Paris.
Bessa (1732-1835) was a French natural history artist best known for his botanical illustrations. He studied under Pierre Redoute and learned many of Redoute's drawing and engraving techniques. Bessa is considered one of the grestest 19th century botanical artists and FLORE DES JARDINIERS was his last work and among his finest.
This Bessa engraving, Mesembrianthemum denticulatum (Ficoide denticule) is a member of the cactus family. On the bottom left in tiny italics is noted the place of origin of the cactus (the Cape) and the season of flowering (summer). It is typical that the Latin and French name of the plant is given and that beside the flower are drawings of different parts of the plant.
Size and Condition
This engraving has a cream colored background and is in very good condition. There is evidence of a strong dark plate mark and indication of the original book binding is on the left side. The colors are bright and beautiful. The approximate size is 8 1/2 x 11 3/8" and a copy of the title page is included.
