1700's
Description
A hand colored copperplate engraving on hand laid watermarked paper, this is a Vue d’ optique published Paris, circa 1761. Titled Vue Perspective de la grande Ceremonie du Couronnement de l’ Empereur de la Chine, it illustrates the crowning of the Chinese Emperor. The throne is at the center of the view surrounded by throngs of people.
This view does not have a title above the engraving which was typical of these views. Vue d’optique views were a very popular print published in Europe in the 18th century and they were considered a form of entertainment. These prints were one of the only ways the public could look at a wider world and they were exhibited by traveling showmen throughout Europe. The views emphasized a linear perspective which further intensified the appearance of depth and illusionistic space when viewed through an “optique."
In this scene, the colors are typically bold so the tints would show when viewed through a lens.
This is a delightful and historical example of a unique 18th century printmaking technique.
