1767
Description
This is a rare, copperplate engraving on hand laid, watermarked paper from Jean Francois de Neufforge’s, Recueil elementaire d’architecture. Engraved and published by de Neufforge, Paris, 1767, the work was a very comprehensive series of architectural studies. Included were studies of doors, columns, stairways, fireplaces, fences and other features of 18th century French architecture. These beautiful engravings are exceptional examples of the decoration of the period immediately preceding and French and American Revolutions.
Jean Francois de Neufforge (1714-1791) was a Flemish architect, artist and engraver. His great work contained over 900 architectural engravings, nearly all of which he both designed and engraved. Throughout the late 18th century, this work was extensively used as a source book as its scope was unprecedented. In addition to architecture, he included topics such as interior decoration, gardens and construction methods.
This engraving, Developpement d’une Porte Corinthienne, is a beautiful large detailed engraving of a Corinthian style door.
