Description
This is a beautiful colored lithograph from Spencer Fullerton’s Baird’s BIRDS OF NORTH AMERICA, published Philadelphia, 1860 and written with John Cassin. Bowen and Co. did the coloring and lithography.
Baird (1823-1887) was a naturalist who worked as Assistant Secretary and Secretary of the Smithsonian Institution for 37 years. He developed the U.S. National Museum and was in charge of explorations and collections made by the government in the expanding West. He was a pioneer in the use of field trips for students as part of a scientific education.
John Cassin (1813-1869) was America’s first serious bird taxonomist. A Pennsyvania Quaker and businessman, Cassin became curator of the Philadelphia Academy of Natural Sciences which housed the largest collection of bird skins then in existence.
Size and Condition The Birds of North America was one of the greatest works on ornithology ever done in the United States. This is Plate XCII, Erismatura Dominica, Grey Ruddy Duck, male and female, and this is a very fine and vibrant image of these birds. The paper is a strong matte sheet and the size is 9” x 11 ½” and this print is in very good condition with minor, faint spotting and a tear in the upper left corner.
