Description
These beautiful prints are chromolithographs from W. S. Colelman's British Butterflies, published London, 1895. Plate VI and VII each depict three British butterfly species with five very colorful butterflies on each print. Plate VIII and IX depict four British butterfly species. They are all in beautiful brown and yellow/gold colors with silver highlights.
The Ocellated Sphinx, The Elephant Sphinx, The Small Tiger Moth, The Matronala Moth, are beautiful and delicate hand colored engravings from Volume II of Captain Thomas Brown's The Book of Butterflies, Sphinxes and Moths, published London 1832.
Captain Thomas Brown (1795-1862) was a British naturalist and zoologist. Borwn in Scotland, he joined the Scottish militia raising to the rank of captain in 1811. While quartered in Manchester, England, he became interested in nature and edited Oliver Goldsmith's famous work, Animated Nature. After his regiment was disbanded, he bought a flax mill which burned down before he was able to insure it. He then began writing nature books and eventually became curator of the Manchester Museum.
Size and Condition
The condition of Coleman's prints is very good and the approximate size is 4 1/2" X 7 1/2". A copy of the title page is included.
The condition of Thomas Brown's prints is very good and the colors are vivid. Paper size is approximately 4" x 6 5/8". A copy of the title page is included as well as a copy of the original text. A lovely gift or addition to a collection for anyone interested in collecting or studying butterflies and moths.
