Description
This is a very beautiful chromolithograph of a mushroom variety, Helvella Gigas and Helvella Infula, from the first edition of F. Leuba’s “Les Champignons Comestibles …” published Paris, 1890.One of the most beautiful and rare work on mushrooms, there were over 52 prints represented, including the exotic truffle. All of the plates have beautiful colors and a few have dramatic and very decorative black backgrounds.
This chromolithograph, Plate XLVIII, beautifully depicts two mushrooms. The Helvella Gigas (Snow Mushroom) is edible and found at the edge of melting snow in some localities. The Helvella Infula is also known as the Elfin Saddle or Hooded False Morel and is considered inedible.
Size and Condition
Condition is very good with some minor staining mostly in the right margin areas. The overall size is approximately 9 ¾” x 13 ½” long. There was no descriptive text but a copy of the title page is included.
