HENRY DRESSER H/C BIRD LITHOGRAPH SIBERIAN MEADOW BUNTING

Information

This is a rare hand -colored lithograph, Siberian Meadow Bunting, from Henry Dresser’s great folio work on birds, “A History of the Birds of Europe,” published in London by the author, 1871-1881. The bird prints contained in the nine volumes are very detailed lithographs with finely applied hand-coloring on fine woven paper. Several artists completed the drawings including John G. Keulemans, a noted Dutch bird illustrator.

It is estimated that only 240 copies of this monumental work were printed so these bird lithographs are very rare and highly collectible.

Henry Dresser (1838-1915) was an English businessman and ornithologist. Through the 1860’s Dresser travelled widely through Europe and he always sought out ornithologists with whom he could exchange birds and eggs. In 1863 during the American Civil War, he travelled to Texas where he made a collection of around 400 bird skins in southern Texas. He was the author of over 100 scientific papers on birds and in addition to “A History of the Birds of Europe,” he published “The Eggs of the Birds of Europe” and monographs on bee-eaters and rollers.

This beautiful lithograph, Siberian Meadow Bunting, shows the male and female birds in a very natural setting. This is a passerine bird of eastern Asia and pairs are monogamous and use the same area for breeding several years in a row.
