Information
This beautiful hand colored lithograph, Leucosticte Griseinucha (Gray Eared Finch) is from Daniel Gerard Elliot’s spectacular work, The Birds of North America. It was published in two volumes (1866-69) Philadelphia by Bowen & Co.
Elliot (1835-1915) was a leading American zoologist whose passion for study led him around the world in search of new data and specimens. A leading figure in both British and American natural history circles, Elliot left his native New York in 1894 to become the curator of zoology at the Field Museum of Natural History in Chicago.
The remarkable collections of birds and animal life that he amazed as a collector and curator are exceeded only by his splendid publishing achievements. At a time when most publishers were going to smaller formats and cheaper coloring techniques, Elliot’s books were distinguished by the highest standards of production. He commissioned Joseph Wolf and Joseph Smith, both of whom had worked for John Gould, to execute many of the drawings.
