George Jones had apprenticed at the Minton factory in the early 1850's when majolica was in it's infancy.
In 1861, Jones went on to establish his own pottery at Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire, England.
The backmark on this George Jones oyster plate indicates it was made in 1861, making this piece 146 years old!
George Jones died in 1893 and his works are highly prized by serious majolica collectors.
Pictures just cannot capture the outstanding detail of this rare oyster plate!
Six large turquoise, ribbed, clam shaped wells form the plate's scalloped rim & are separated by caramel colored elongated shells with green/brown seaweed (in relief).

This sauce well top edge measures approx .75" high from it's RAISED bed of various seashells & seaweed, all in deep relief.
Measuring 11" diam. the plate sits a bit over TWO inches high (including the sauce well) off the table.
The reverse is green/brown mottled and marked appropriately.
