He is identified as Benjamin Hazeltine. Benjamin was born 1/13/1791, Warwick, MA and died in 1857, Belfast, Maine. Because of his bustline, and that he was cut in Maine, I attribute this work to Samuel Banton.
The frame measures 4 3/4 x 5 1/2 inches. Although somewhat nicely done, someone had painted the frame black over gold-leaf years ago. One may able to remove the paint completely without harming the gold-leaf underneath. The reverse painted mat is also well-done, but it is not original.
The silhouette is well-cut with nicely drawn hair details in ink. There is a tear below the bust, which has been stabilized with archival tape. The white spot is laceration of the paper. Although not in the best condition, the sitter and the artist are attributed. If this silhouette had Banton's embossment, I would ask for much more. If interested in signed Banton, please see my listing. Also, check out my blog on silhouettes about more on Banton. This current offering is bargain priced.
