Nice Selection of Antique Silhouettes, Miniature Portraits, Books about Them & Historical Coins and Medals
This is a very early portrait of a woman with lace bonnet. She has half-smile like Mona Lisa. The sight measures 13 x 16 1/4". The painting is on its original stretcher. It has been placed in a custom-made frame with glass. Spacers were used so the painting does not touch the glass. In this frame, she measures 15 1/2 x 18 1/2". So, it is not small nor large. It could hang anywhere.
She is painted on parchment. As with canvas painting, it is not laid down but stretched. It does have slight waviness as a result. The sitter is very well painted. Because of its oval outline, the first artist that popped into my head was William Jennys. However, I make no such wild attribution here. I know a few things about American silhouettes, but as you can see this is no silhouette.
She has two repairs along the border (see photo) at around 3 o'clock position. She also has rubbing and thinning of colors in areas; pastel rubs off easily. Because the repairs are in the dark background, they are not readily noticeable. As you can see, the all important face is nice.
If you have been searching for a genuine American portrait, with presence, from circa 1800, but just could not see dishing out mid four-figures, this is an excellent buy. How can you possibly go wrong at this price?
No money? No biggie! See my easy layaway plan.
