Nice Selection of Antique Silhouettes, Miniature Portraits, Books about Them & Historical Coins and Medals
Of course, I have no documentation that this is George Washington. It looks like the man. His nose and chin are very suggestive.
The ink painting is on wove paper. His collar was left unpainted to show that he wore a stand-up collar. The paper, along with the painting, is in very fine condition without defects. The frame is period, gilt brass-over wood and measures 4 1/2 x 5 inches, with an oval opening of 2 5/8 x 3 3/8". Aside from wear/crack to the left bottom corner of the frame, it is in fine condition.
This silhouette is NOT a modern reproduction. It is NOT a mass produced late 19th century decorative piece. This silhouette can stand on its own as circa 1800 art and so guaranteed, as all of my items are. The only problem I have is that I cannot prove this is Washington. You be the judge. At this price, how can you go wrong?
I cleaned the glass, placed acid-free black backing and secured the back with styroboard. All you have to do is hang him. Brits would have loved that!
No money? No biggie! See my easy layaway plan.
