Super American Hollow-Cut Silhouette with Original Brass-over-Wood Frame of a Boy

This silhouette is a very nice find! It is a hollow-cut with wash decorated details of the sitter's hair. The sitter is very young, perhaps three years of age. I always believed this type of work in this type of frame was by William Chamberlain, and I still do. This would date circa 1825.

The frame, too, is a real dandy with very little wear to the gilding and shines with lovely, slightly muted warm tone. This is a scarce small-sized frame that measures 3 x 3.75 inches. The silhouette paper has a portion of watermark (see photo). Silhouettes of very young children are very difficult to locate and always in demand. If you had a choice of buying an old woman or a child, which would you prefer?
