Ca.1825 American Hollow-Cut Silhouette Lovely Child I

$395 USDCa.1825 American Hollow-Cut Silhouette Lovely Child I

Antiques:Primitives:Antiques:Silhouettes
Originally found in Maine, I believe this silhouette to be an early work by Samuel Banton (see another listing for its sister). This sitter is perhaps seven or eight years of age. She has penciled embellishment. There is a closed tear above her head; it does not run into the cutting. Aside from some very minor toning, the paper is fresh and strong, mostly white. The black mat is not old. It is made of acid-free paper with hand-decorated gold design. It works nicely. She is in a period, gilt pine ...
Ca.1825 American Hollow-Cut Silhouette Lovely Child II

$395 USDCa.1825 American Hollow-Cut Silhouette Lovely Child II

Antiques:Primitives:Antiques:Silhouettes
Originally found in Maine, I believe this silhouette to be an early work by Samuel Banton (see another listing for its sister). This sitter is perhaps four or five years of age. She has penciled details. The wove paper is still quite fresh and strong, and mostly white. The black mat is not old. It is made of acid-free paper with hand-decorated gold design. It works nicely. She is in a period, gilt pine frame with original bubbled glass that measures 4 1/8 x 4 3/4 inches. The opening is 2 3/4 x 3 ...
Unique Miniature Portrait of Dwarf Woman

$395 USDUnique Miniature Portrait of Dwarf Woman

Antiques:Primitives:Antiques:Portrait Painting
This miniature is watercolor on card with a good use of Chinese white on the bonnet and her lace dress. The frame is a typical paper mache, black lacquered with brass acorn hanger and measures 4.5 x 5.25 inches. The opening is about 2.5 x 3 inches. Although at first appearance the sitter looks like a pre-teen child, this is not the case. She is actually a "little person," a dwarf, who is probably in her mid to late twenties. Her face is fully developed, but her upper body, along with her arm, ...
Suberb Ca.1830 Identified Silhouette Young Man Maine

$595 USDSuberb Ca.1830 Identified Silhouette Young Man Maine

Antiques:Primitives:Antiques:Silhouettes
There is an old tag on the back of the frame that says, "Arad Hazeltine, born in Warwick, Feb. 1794." This Arad is no doubt the same Arad as the one born on 15 Feb 1794 in Warwick, Franklin, Mass. He moved to Maine and married Anastasia Cotterill in 1822. Arad served during the War of 1812 as a corporal and later became a lawyer in Newcasle, Maine. This is a very fine silhouette that is well cut with penciled hair details. The frame is black painted pine that measures 4 3/8 x 5 1/4 inches. The ...

Very Rare American 19th Century Double Silhouette

$695 USDVery Rare American 19th Century Double Silhouette

Antiques:Primitives:Antiques:Silhouettes
This is only the second one I ever saw or owned. There are plenty of those "assembled" double silhouettes in a single frame, but they are two separate silhouettes placed in one frame. We can all assemble something like that easily. This present offering, however, is the real McCoy. This is a pair of hollow-cuts from one sheet of wove paper. Both silhouettes are well cut without defects. The paper has slight toning. What appears to be a laceration to the left of the woman's head is actually a ...
Early 19th Century Miniature Portrait Man Brass Frame

$425 USDEarly 19th Century Miniature Portrait Man Brass Frame

Antiques:Primitives:Antiques:Portrait Painting
This is a nice miniature portrait dating to about 1820 of a man worked in watercolor and gouache. He is very well painted on card. Aside from some minor wear to the border, he is in fine condition. The brass-over-wood period frame has been refinished nicely and measures 4 1/2 x 5 1/4 inches with an opening of 2 5/8 x 3 3/8". The sitter's backgroung color matches well with the frame and makes for an attractive display. No money? No biggie! See my easy layaway plan.
Magnificent American Miniature Portrait Circa 1830

$2,450 USDMagnificent American Miniature Portrait Circa 1830

Fine Art:Paintings
This is circa 1830 American miniature portrait on ivory. It is in its original pressed brass frame over wood and measures about 4 25 x 5.25 inches. The gilding is worn from the rope decorated border but still bright within the recessed areas. I cleaned the glass and dusted off the image with fine silk brush and sealed the back. It is ready for a new home. The painting is perfect without any defects to the ivory. There are no inpainting. The colors are bright. I looked very hard for artist's ...

Sterling Georgian Sugar Tong

$50 USDSterling Georgian Sugar Tong

Collectibles:Metalware
The piece is marked within rectangle with I.K., which I believe is for Keith with a date stamp 1817. It measures about 5.75 inches and has a monogram that appears to be entwined JB. It is in very fine condition.
Very Rare Edouart Boy Silhouette Identified Early 1840s

$800 USDVery Rare Edouart Boy Silhouette Identified Early 1840s

Fine Art:Paintings
I found this silhouette locally, where Edouart worked for some years. It was likely taken by Edouart when he visited St. Lawrence County, New York. This is a documented travel itinerary. The silhouette appears to be fully painted at first sight, but it is actually cut-and-paste with gilt detailing. The eyelash is inked. The painting is of a young boy of about 8 or 9 years old. The sitter does look like a girl but the inscription on the bottom of this image reads, "Master T. Thornhill, Aged..." ...

Original Pair of Man and Wife Miniature Portraits Circa 1840

$450 USDOriginal Pair of Man and Wife Miniature Portraits Circa 1840

Fine Art:Paintings
This is a very nice set with matching frames and mats. The mats are gilded wood! The frame measures about 5.5 x 7 inches. The openings are 4 x 5.25 inches. They both retain their original wooden backboards and hanging rings. The silhouettes are both fully painted. The woman has golden details along with minor greyish-white. The man has platinum hair with white collar and a touch of gold decoration. They were likely painted by different artists. This is a superb pair!
Unusual Victorian Practice Sampler by a BOY

$50 USDUnusual Victorian Practice Sampler by a BOY

Collectibles:Folk Art
Unsual Practice Sampler Dated 1888 This measures about 14.5 x 24 fully opened. The design area is 13.5 x 18.5 inches. One-half of one side of border was never finished. I believe this was done by a boy, Jameson Dixon. I have no idea what "AM stands for. This sampler would look great displayed as it is on a low dresser or a table.
Rare c.1795 Profile Portrait by J.J. Boudier

$625 USDRare c.1795 Profile Portrait by J.J. Boudier

Antiques:Primitives:Antiques:Silhouettes
J. J. Boudier and His Profile – A New Find Not much is known about Boudier, a French artist, who emigrated to America in the 1790s. We know him only as J. J. Boudier (I guess we never knew J. J. Evans’s real name either on “Good Times,” TV show of the 70s). Ellen Miles gives the best account of Boudier (pp. 64-65) in her monumental work, “Saint-Memin and the Neoclassical Profile Portrait in America.” How many of you have ever heard of Boudier before today? None, I bet. Miles writes, “Boudier’s ...
Very Scarce Close-Plate Skewer

$75 USDVery Scarce Close-Plate Skewer

Collectibles:Metalware
This skewer measures about 14 inches. This is NOT the common silverplated ware of the mid to late Victorian period. The base is iron or steel, which is close-plated with silver. This was a very difficult process to do back then thus not many made. This piece is signed "Prime" with other marks and dates to ca.1820 or so. Other than slight wear and minor bend, this is in very fine condition.
Rare Miniature Portrait by James Gillespie

$650 USDRare Miniature Portrait by James Gillespie

Fine Art:Paintings
This English, miniature portrait painter is quite important as Gillespie also worked in North America: New York City, Baltimore, and Philadelphia, as well as Halifax. Although he also worked in all-black silhouettes, Gillespie is best known for his miniatures in monochromatic tones in imitation of copper-plate busts, as this current offering is. Here, he works in shades of grey. The present example is in its original frame with Gillespie's trade label on the reverse, "LIKENESSES /taken by / J. H ...
Victorian Sterling Silver Napkin Ring

$35 USDVictorian Sterling Silver Napkin Ring

Collectibles:Metalware
When I saw this, I had to buy it because of its really fine chasing and engraving. It is marked "Sterling" inside and weighs 13 grams. The diameter is 45mm. The floral pattern is repeated four times all around plus a medallion with intials "C?F?" I believe this piece is early Victorian from the type of florals used. In fact, this pattern was popular in the third-quarter 18th century as well.
Rare Fully Painted William Bache Silhouette Circa 1810

$750 USDRare Fully Painted William Bache Silhouette Circa 1810

Antiques:Primitives
He is one of my favorite artists. I admire his unique bustline. Here we have what looks to be a middle-aged woman with frills around her collar dating to circa 1810. She is fully painted, and Bache uses Chinese white to delineate her details. Close observation of her bust area exposes three-petal floral patterns on her shirt. Although the bottom portion has weakness, the embossed stamp says, "Bache's Patent." This particular word "Patent" was also used by Day and Todd as Day's Patent and Todd's ...
Rare Moses Chapman Embossed Stamp Antique Silhouette Circa 1810

$750 USDRare Moses Chapman Embossed Stamp Antique Silhouette Circa 1810

Antiques:Primitives
This circa 1810 silhouette of a young man is by Moses Chapman. Carrick says he is not a rare artist and bases her opinion on having seen the duplicate cuttings owned by Chapman's descendant. However, she also mentions that she had never seen any embossed sihouettes by him. In other words, it is quite difficult, if not impossible, to attribute Chapman's works based on his bustline. The embossment says, "Chapman Siccauit (Siccavit)." I believe "Siccauit" means something similar to "fecit" or "by." ...
Rare Wellesley Auction Catalog of Silhouettes

$75 USDRare Wellesley Auction Catalog of Silhouettes

Books:Antique
This thin catalog is called the "Catalog of the Collection of Silhouette Portraits Formed by Francis Wellesley, Esq., J.P. of Westfield Common, Woking" auctioned by Messrs. Christie, Manson & Woods on June 19, 1917. It is 17 pages with 174 lots. Wellesley was the author of "One Hundred Silhouette." That is the most important book on silhouettes ever published; only 100 copies were printed, and it was a prize to own back then. It is still a prize to own a copy today, too, if one could locate a ...
Rare American Hollow-Cut Silhouette by T.P.Jones

$600 USDRare American Hollow-Cut Silhouette by T.P.Jones

Antiques:Primitives
Jones was a competent silhouettist. I like his style. Not many of his works are found. But then, he worked with duplicate cuttings, so many of his works are unattributed. He worked with the plain hollow-cuts and hollow-cuts with inked detailing. This embellished silhouette I consider it one of the best by Jones. He is sometimes known as F.P.Jones, but this sharp embossment is clear enough to say for sure that he is T.P.Jones. Groce says, "Silhouettist working in the vicinity of Schenectady, NY ...
Wonderful Ca. 1825 American Silhouette Fine Frame

$525 USDWonderful Ca. 1825 American Silhouette Fine Frame

Antiques:Primitives:Antiques:Silhouettes
This package is all original through and through! The frame is gold-leafed and measures 4 3/4 X 5 1/2 inches, or just under, with some wear around its edges. The reverse painted mat is very fine. The silhouette is very well cut and has penciled details. This is a very fine folk art package. You will love it. No money? No biggie! See my easy layaway plan.

Very Rare Samuel Bradburn Banton Silhouette Circa 1830

$850 USDVery Rare Samuel Bradburn Banton Silhouette Circa 1830

Antiques:Primitives
The possibility of Carrick having seen any silhouette by Banton is unlikely. If she did, she would have surely mentioned the many similarities with those works by Chamberlain. Furthermore, Carrick fails to mention Banton’s embossment. It is unique, as the embossment includes the words “Cut by.” There is not a single instance where American silhouettists used this particular type of embossment. From this photograph (see close-up of embossment), Banton’s embossment has a curve that matches his ...
American Hollow-Cut Silhouette of a Young Man Early 19th Century

$175 USDAmerican Hollow-Cut Silhouette of a Young Man Early 19th Century

Antiques:Primitives
The frame is period and is made of plaster over wood with what I call silver-gilt. This type of gilding is much scarcer than the gold-leaf type. It measures about 4.75 x 5.75 inches with some wear around the periphery and loss of gilding here and there. The opening is about 3.25 x 4.25 inches. The hollow-cut is well done with the hanging forelock, typical of circa 1810 style. The artist is unknown American. The sitter is probably ten years or so, a cute looking boy. Silhouettes of children, ...
History of American SIlhouettes 1790-1840

Books:About Collecting:Books:19th Century Silhouettes
This is the MUST have for anyone who has an interest in 19th century American silhouettes, packed with illustrations and a very cozy book to read. Alice Carrick was a competent writer and fun to read. We have a fine reprint, 1968 edition, here with the original dust jacket. DJ even has its original price, which is unusual. The reprint is actually on better grade paper stock than the original is. You will learn just about everything about American silhouettes and their artists within these pages. ...
