Antiques:Historical Document
Important Baltimore Letter 1800 Talbot Jones of B&O Railroad We have a nice letter written by Talbot Jones of Baltimore dated August 26, 1800, addressed to Mr McIntosh. This is Duncan McIntosh. Duncan is considered a hero for having obtained a release of thousands of Frenchmen during the Haitian revolution (1804). He spent his fortune doing so. Although the content of this letter is typical merchant talk of the day, Talbot Jones was (see below): Talbot was the founder of Talbot Jones & Co. In ...
Maritime Stampless Letter Philadelphia 1799

$75 USDMaritime Stampless Letter Philadelphia 1799

Vintage Collectibles:Historical
Maritime Stampless Letter Philadelphia 1799 This is a very nice letter written by Thomas Loyd on August 6th, 1799 in Philadelphia and sent to John Imlay of St. Thomas. He seems to be complaining about a shortage of weight and qantity of bagged coffee that he ordered. To make the matter worse, two bags were being detained by the customhouse. He does not like that a bit. Key words that appear in this letter are William Gibbons, William Ridge, Sloop Betsy, Quaker, etc. The letter is on laid paper ...

Slave Colony of French Guiana 1818 Coin

$50 USDSlave Colony of French Guiana 1818 Coin

Vintage Collectibles:Coins, Currency
France controlled major sugar producing plantations during the 18th and the first half of the 19th century. French Guiana was one of them. By the time this coin was struck in 1818, there were at least a few thousands slaves toiling there already. This is billon coinage (debased silver) and is about a size of US nickel. As far as I know, this is the only coin available from the early slavery days of French Guiana. There was another issue made post-revolution in 1846. Our coin is in nice grade ...

$80 USDScarce Ex-Slavery State Haiti Coin 1831 50 Centimes

Vintage Collectibles:Coins, Currency
This is a nice high grade coin in silver, actually billon (debased coinage of silver/copper mixture). This coin has the French date of AN 28 (1831). Although called 50 centimes, it is only slightly larger than our quarters. The obverse shows Boyer, one of the leaders of the Haitian Revolution, and President of Haiti from 1818 to 1843. The early coins (pre-1850) of Haiti are quickly and quietly being absorbed by collectors interested in slavery materials. The early coinage was made and used by ex ...

Rare Letter from St. Pierre Martinique Dated 1800

$75 USDRare Letter from St. Pierre Martinique Dated 1800

Vintage Collectibles:Historical
Although the heading of this letter is "Dear Sir," there is no doubt the recipient of it was none other than John Imlay of St. Thomas. The letter talks about insurance payment and how rum and butter bring very high prices. The letter is dated 14 May 1800 and signed by Peter Laurie. I did not get a chance to find out who this Laurie was. I have many documents to catalog. The letter is on laid paper measuring 8 x 10" with a partial watermark of a crown visible. What is special about Saint Pierre? ...

$300 USDVery Rare 18th Century Button Gwinnett Connection Ephemera

Antiques:Folk Art
Any 18th century material relating to Button Gwinnett, signer of the Declaration of Independence, is very rare. In fact, his signature is said to be one of the rarest in the world and can realize six-figures! We do not have one here; however, we are offering a genuine Gwinnett material from the mid-1700s for your consideration. This offering is for a bookplate that belonged to his brother, Samuel Gwinnett (1732-1792). The only other Gwinnett bookplate I know of is in the collection of Emory ...

18th Century American Revolution Yorktown Admiral Item

$300 USD18th Century American Revolution Yorktown Admiral Item

Antiques:Folk Art
This bookplate is a super find! Admiral Graves may have been the key man responsible for losing the colonial war for King George. Of course, this is debatable, but Graves could have altered the siege of Yorktown and dramatically changed history. But then, this is all "what if" type game at best. Graves was a governor of Newfoundland between 1761-64. In 1781 he became the commander of North American fleet. In September of the same year, he faced Admiral de Grasse at Chesapeake Bay. We all know ...
1796 Philadelphia Receipt Famous Andrew Brown

$50 USD1796 Philadelphia Receipt Famous Andrew Brown

Vintage Collectibles:Historical
I just picked up an old collection of documents dating from the 1790s to 1810 or so. They have been put away 30 years ago so are fresh to the market. All of the documents belonged to John Imlay (I754-1813), an 18th century merchant/ship captain who traded between West Indies and Philadelphia. He was originally from Allentown, New Jersey, and his house still exists. I understand it is quite famous, being crème of the Georgian architecture. During the American Revolution, Imlay performed his ...

This prize medal was awarded to those cadets at the Royal Military Academy for excellence. Any period medal that has any connection to Seven Years War (French-Indian War in this ...
Scarce Master Hubard Silhouette of Boy

$395 USDScarce Master Hubard Silhouette of Boy

Antiques:Primitives:Antiques:Silhouettes
We have a very nice silhouette here with Hubard's stenciled stamp on the back of the frame, "TAKEN AT THE / HUBARD GALLERY / 109 STRAND." The frame measures 4 1/8 x 5" and has been crudely refinished. The opening is 2 3/4 x 3 5/8". This work is cut-and-paste, but unlike American works, which are simply cut using black paper, this is 100% painted in black ink with delineation using grey. The sitter is a young man wearing graduation garb. He is in very fine state of preservation, and the painting ...
SALE PENDING Allentown New Jersey Document 1797 John Imlay

$100 USD Sale PendingSALE PENDING Allentown New Jersey Document 1797 John Imlay

Antiques:Historical Document
We have a fine handwritten document here dated July 25, 1797. It was signed in Allentown, New Jersey. This is articles of agreement between Captain John Imlay, Captain Samuel Criswell, and Ephraim Silver. The content is about division of stock inventory between the above merchants. I was not able to find anything on Sam Criswell. Perhaps you may have a better luck. However, we know that Ephraim (Terrell) Silver was born in 1775 in Burlington County, NJ and was married to Elizabeth Rogers of ...
