We are offering an unmarked Nippon 7 1/2" bon bon shaped plate or plaque of a hand painted country scene done in the incredible tapestry finish. The scalloped plate is of a country scene on a river bank, with late afternoon sun casting tree shadows on the grass. A small cottage in the background is shown beyond a white bridge that spans the blue waters of the river shown in the foreground. Small yellow flowers appear to bloom on the cottage grounds. There is a dark gold edge of moriage dots that rim the detailed design and blends into a gold moriage accent line that echos the scalloped edge of the dish. Hand painted, the attention to detail even includes the bark on the tree trunk and the leaves on the trees.
The tapestry effect , named because it resembled needlepoint, was achieved by wrapping the piece in fabric soaked in the clay and stretching it over the piece before the bisque firing, the heat would burn off the material, usually canvas, and result in the pebble like tapestry finish of the plate, the plate would then be painted and fired again. .
The back of the plate is unmarked and unglazed with two factory holes for hanging. Unmistakably Nippon in style and execution. There is a small amount of wear to the gold painted edge, does not detract but it is present.
