On the lid, there is an amazing early photo of an American Indian mother with her baby wrapped on a swaddling board and secured with a rawhide type of rope. This photo would have been brought back to Scotland and would be a special request to be added to the lid of this tartanware thread container.
Inside this container there are six thread posts with six bone/ivory ‘ports’ on the side from which to pull the tread through. On the inside lid there is a label for ‘”George A. Clark’s Thread.” The dates on the Clark label are 1862.
This Tartanware item is in wonderful condition with all the ivory/bone portals in lovely condition, the lid only shows some wear which would be natural for something of this age. The hand painted elaborate gold-embellished decoration is on the outside rim of the lid, around the very rare early photo of American Indian mother and Child.
This very rare and special tartanware item is in lovely condition with one tiny nicks to the tartan plaid and under each thread portal there is also a number to indicate what thread weight would be on the spool inside the box. The center, on the inside of the box may have held a small needle or pin container.
