Here are three beautifully bound volumes of William Makepeace Thackeray's works. Included are two volumes of Vanity Fair, and one volume that includes The Memoirs of Mr. Charles T. Yellowplush, The Fitz-Boodle Papers, Cox's Diary, & Character Sketchers. These volumes are part of a larger collection published by Smith, Elder & Co., London in 1879. The binding of these books are rich and beautiful. The spines are bound in a red leather with black text blocks that use gold lettering. Gold tooling is used to create figures on the spine. The cover is a gorgeous marbleized design using swirls of light brown, blue and red. This same pattern continues on the end pages, as well as on the text block edges.
On the backside of the cover are two book plates that presumably were placed there by previous owners. The earlier, and larger one shows a coat of arms and the phrase "Cresco per Crucem" which means "I increase by the cross," with the name K. C. Crmbleton (sp?). A smaller book plate has been pasted on the larger one, and it reads William Waples, Sunderland.
The books measure 7 1/2" N/S by 5 1/2" E/W. Three beautiful books for your collection.
