In the foreground is the Colloden Moor showing herders, one on horseback moving a herd of Highland Cattle (also known as Dexter cattle, which originated in Ireland) across a small stone bridge. These small, fury cattle are found in several of Hollyer's paintings, and in this one they are beautifully painted and captured in this wonderful Scottish scene.
A small village can be seen on the right side of the painting. The background shows a ridge of Scottish mountains, and at the base of the mountains can be seen drawings of buildings of a village miles away.
Although we do not have a date, this is probably one of his paintings, which were very popular, done in the mid- to late 19th century.
This antique painting does have some splits or cracks to the paint, but no rips to the canvas. There is a bit of a dent seen on the upper right side of the canvas. Other than this original , beautiful painting is in lovely condition.
This is an original painting by one of Britain's famous family of artists. All five of William Perring Hollyer's children became painters. Hollyer is listed in the Davenport's Art Reference book.
