Snow??!! Already??!! time to do your early holiday shopping for your friends, family and YOU!
These were manufactured mainly in two sizes (this large one, and a smaller version) and three colors: clear, green and orange. They can be very fragile; light exposure makes the plastic even more brittle and may cause discoloration, a process which is called “solarizing”. We highly recommend that the interested ornithologist keep this cage out of direct sunlight.
Although the decorative designs of pretty scrolls and flowers in the plastic are quite intricate, there are no identifying marks or manufacturers' names on this cage. It is suggested that many people in rural America shopped through catalogs, thus purchasing non-branded items. Many cages were also stamped at local stores, while some hardware stores put their own names on the cages they offered.
Some of the research we have done says these are from the mid-forties and early fifties...the floral design hints at earlier times, though, such as the thirties, or even late 20's.
This beauty measures 14.75" long by 9" wide by 12.75" high. It has a handle with a built in slot to hang it up away from your cats, and there are two perches that fit in snugly across the cage. It is in wonderful condition, except for a crack (which does NOT affect its performance) in one of the sliding doors, and one end of one of the perches has knobs missing, but it fits so snugly that it is still VERY secure for a little birdy to sit and sing on!
It has the original (and very clever) food and water dishes, and there is a swing, too, but the loop for holding it up is not with this...it would be simple enough to latch it on with a ring from a key holder, for example. Also, the bottom tray slides out for easy cleaning.
This is fabulously clean and in remarkable vintage collectible condition. It would keep any parakeet or canary in bird heaven, such luxurious surroundings fit for a princess avian!
ACTUALLY, we had a friend suggest this be used for a hamster, gerbil or other little critter such as that...I'm not sure of keeping them in plastic, if they would chew through it or not...think I'd stick with birds, or just fresh flowers!
