Vintage Authentic Casa Chavez Sombrero Mexican Hat

We have this wonderful sombrero by Adolfo Chavez of Casa Chavez, labeled "Gran fabrica de sombreros de palma" (means "Great manufacturers of hats of palm") Rayon No. 9 (or possibly 4, it's hard to read) Sahuayo, Mich (for Sahuayo Michoacán, Mexico which is south and east of Guadalajara. The name Sahuayo means "turtle shaped pot," and it has been call the Athens of Michoacán because of so many important poets, writers and painters. Today it is the seat for Arts Propositions Association.) XXXXX.

This hat is a delightful 17" from side to side, and about 18" from front to back. It is made in what is called the "charro" or gentleman cowboy style, with the four indents in the top of the hat which keeps the hat in place better than a double dent hat which is said to be more of a mariachi or entertainment sort of hat ALTHOUGH

this hat is SO embellished!

It has red felt around the rim with bands of ric rac and braid trim layered around and up and over the rim to the underside as well! The top has a magnificient design in oranges, yellow, pink, white and turquoise. There are loops and tassels, embroidery, leather and miniature lassos on each side!

This also has a doubled purple and gold braid chin strap that is 33" long, and is adjustable! apparently this hat was actually worn also, as the ends are a bit frayed, and there is one area where the rick rack and braid joins underneath the brim where it has frayed a touch also.

Now please understand, this is NOT a goofy kids party hat, this is a wonderful work of textile and weaving art! We are selling it as is, though, as explained, please see all photos. This really is an amazing piece of art work, if you are a true collector of these fabulous hats, you KNOW what a steal this one is!

Even so, this would be an excellent part of decor for a festive Cinco de Mayo party this year!
