From PREFACE:

“Sgialachdan Albainn Nuaidh, or Scottish Gaelic Stories from Nova Scotia, was published by Gairm Publications, 227 Bath Street, Glasgow, C.2., Scotland, in 1969 (copyright). The under-signed was the editor of this all-Gaelic publication.

Within the last few years, I have received several requests to translate these Gaelic stories into English. My translations are not polished or academic; they are strictly literal and homespun, in an attempt to illustrate the idiom, colourful phrases, and expressions of Scottish Gaelic. They should also help the acquirer of written Gaelic to understand the syntax, construction, and grammar of the language. Calum MacLeod, Nova Scotia 1974.

AUTHOR: “Calum I.N. MacLeod was born in Dornie, Ross-shire, Scotland, in 1913, and educated at Knockbain Public School, Inverness Royal Academy, and Skerry’s College. He specialized in Celtic Languages, Literature, History and Antiquities in the Universities of Glasgow and Edinburgh. He emigrated to Nova Scotia in 1950, where he held the appointment of Gaelic Adviser, Adult Education Division, Nova Scotia Department of Education, until 1958 when he became the first Professor and Chairman of the Department of Celtic Studies, St. Francis Xavier University, Antigonish, N.S.”
