This is a Martha Chase Stockinette Cloth Doll in a Rare Small Size measuring 14" tall. and appears to be a boy perhaps a Dickens character or other character boy. This treated and painted Martha Chase stockinette doll is marked Chase/ Stockinette Doll/ Trade_Mark to the left front hip area. He has a sateen cloth body with oil painted limbs and head jointed at the shoulders, hips, elbows and knees. Please notice that the head is positioned slightly to the left, and he has tiny molded ears. The blonde oil painted hair was painted with a rough stroke to provide texture (some typical paint loss to the hair with no flaking). There is an old stitched repair to the left wrist (all the way around the wrist with some cotton stuffing showing) and continuing to the lower left arm. Also the top pf the left shoulder has old some reinforcement stitching. In removing the stockings, you can see that the ankle also has some stitched repair to it. The shoe and sock must be stitched to foot as it could not be removed totally, but enough to see that the foot has some stitching there as well. He is wearing black velveteen shoes with buckle trim and long white knit stockings. One leg appears to be longer than the other due primarily to the way the shoes fit the feet. Certainly he is a most intriguing character in a very small size.
