This beautiful set of Mother of Pearl handled cocktail knives and forks is marked JD&S for James Dixon and Sons. There is also a shield mark next to the company mark. This set appears to be silverplate. The company was founded in 1806 in Sheffield, England and became leading manufactures of silverplate a s well as Brittannia wares. Their items were imported into this country during the 1830s to 1860s. The set comes in its original box which has a good bit of wear, including loss of the hinges that originally closed the box. The set is also missing 2 knives. The six forks and 4 knives are all in beautiful condition. The forks are 5.25" long. The knives measure almost 6.25" long. The case measure 7.5" by 9.25", and has a satin lining in the lid, and velvet on the bottom.
