Frank Beall, a California decoy carver who passed away in the early 1990's, made beautiful decoys including salesman sample size replicas of turn of the century Mason decoys. This is one of those salesman sample Wood Duck Drakes with his signature dated 1-18-87 and 5 of 5 on the underside. His method of staining and hand painting lets the beautiful wood grains show through. The decoy measures about 9" long, 3" wide, and 3.5" tall. The are a few flaws I need to mention. When I purchased this piece, he arrived with a detached head. It has been re-glued. The ink used for the signature has bled at some time past and there are three spots or excess paint on the underside. Due to the flaws I have greatly reduced the price from what I would normally ask. Not sure if the eyes are glass or plastic. Still a lovely piece for display.
