In her second book of the "Earth's Children" series, American author and storytelling genius Jean Marie Auel continues the compelling saga of human survival in prehistoric Europe. Peopled with rich and complex Ice Age characters, the epic transcends time and place. The plot centers on the next phase in the life of the young Cro-Magnon orphan Ayla, who had been adopted into a Neanderthal clan. Whereas in the first book, her differences with her new family were a source of continual conflict, in this book, she faces much different challenges (see below FMI). All the while, the characters experience a full range of human emotions and behaviors, making for an engrossing read. The delightfully addictive, well-researched work has a believable quality and timeless appeal. According to Publishers Weekly the work is "Shiningly intense... Sheer storytelling skill holds the reader in a powerful spell."

Crown Publishers, Inc. of New York, NY published this first edition work in 1982. It was printed in the USA, has 502 pages, maps on the front and back page ends, measures about 9 ½” x 6 ½” x 1 ½” and has navy blue cloth covered boards and a beige spine with blue lettering. The colorful pictorial dust jacket was painted by Hiroko.

The copy offered here is a first printing of the first edition in NEAR FINE vintage condition. It does not have any former owner stamps or names, and is NOT an ex-library book. The text appears bright, supple and unmarked. The book is approaching FINE (AS NEW, MINT) condition except that the page edges have minor age spotting and some pages are creased, which we have tried to show in the photos of the page edges (looks like a drop boo boo) and ever so slight cover edge wear. The original unclipped dust jacket (with the original price) is in NEAR FINE vintage condition, with minor wear (e.g., bumping, rubbing, two barley visible tears that are only about 1/16 of an inch each), mostly at the extremities. Please see the photos.

Copies of this book in collectible condition such as this can be more difficult to find than those of Clan Of The Cave Bear. Hence, not only is this modern first edition a great read, it would also make a thoughtful gift for Auel fans and collectors.

The five "Earth's Children" novels are:

Book One. THE CLAN OF THE CAVE BEAR (which we also have available)

Book Two. THE VALLEY OF HORSES (this listing)

Book Three. THE MAMMOTH HUNTERS (which we also have available)

Book Four. THE PLAINS OF PASSAGE

Book Five. THE SHELTERS OF STONE (which we also have available)

From the publisher:

Here is an unforgettable odyssey into a world of awesome mysteries, into a distant past made vividly real, a novel that carries us back to the exotic, primeval world we experienced in "The Clan Of The Cave Bear" -- and to beautiful Ayla, the bold woman who captivates us with her fierce courage and questing heart. Cruelly cast out by the ancient Clan that adopted her as a child, Ayla now travels alone in a land of glacial cold and terrifying beasts. She is searching for the Others, a race as tall, blond, and blue-eyed as she. But Ayla finds only a hidden valley, where a herd of hardy steppe horses roams. Here, she is granted a unique kinship with animals, enabling her to learn the secrets of fire and raw survival -- but still, her need for human companionship and love remains unfulfilled. then fate brings her a stranger, handsome Jondolar, and Ayla is torn between fear and hope -- and carried to an awakening of desire that would shape the future of mankind.
