In her first book of the "Earth's Children" series, American author and storytelling genius Jean Marie Auel weaves a compelling saga of human survival in prehistoric Europe. Peopled with rich and complex Ice Age characters, the epic transcends time and place. The plot centers on young Cro-Magnon orphan Ayla, who is adopted into a Neanderthal clan. As her differences with her new family are source of continual conflict, the characters experience a full range of human emotions and behaviors, making for an engrossing read. The delightfully addictive, well-researched work has a believable quality and timeless appeal.

Crown Publishers, Inc. of New York, NY published this first edition work in 1980. It was printed in the USA, has 468 pages, maps on the front and back page ends, measures about 9 ½” x 6 ½” x 1 ½” and has green cloth covered boards and a yellow spine with blue lettering. The colorful pictorial dust jacket was painted by Hiroko.

The copy offered here is a first printing of the first edition in NEAR FINE vintage condition. It does not have any former owner stamps or names, and is NOT an ex-library book. The text appears bright, supple and unmarked (looks unread). The book is approaching FINE (AS NEW, MINT) condition except that the cover and page edges have minor age spotting as shown and ever so slight cover edge wear. The original unclipped dust jacket (with the original $12.95 price) is in VERY GOOD condition, with minor wear (chipping, bumping and rubbing), mostly at the extremities. It is now in a clear protective cover.

The collectible modern first edition is a great read and would make a thoughtful gift!
