These hard to find pair of Noritake china sandwich trays from the early 20th Century feature a city in silhouette -- Venice or an Eastern Port (maybe Alexandria, Cairo, or Istanbul) -- with an oarsman at the helm of a gondola in the foreground floating on a sea, river or lake. The pairing produces a complementary effect. One, with blues and greens depicts the scene at noon or midnight; the other, in orange and yellow, at daybreak or dusk. Each has a gold center loop handle that adds to their appeal and functionality. The set is a great gift idea for collectors of maritime and nautical items, and anyone who enjoys vintage decorative arts and/or old Noritake.

MARK: Noritake red “M in wreath” Hand Painted, Made in Japan, with Japanese / Chinese characters, registered by Nippon Toki Kaisha, Ltd. in 1918 (DHS #29.1).

CONDITION: Remarkable Vintage Condition (no chips, cracks, crazing or repairs).

SIZE: Almost 2.75” to the top of the handle, each plate’s diameter is about 7.75”

COLORS: Gold trim, rich shades of peach, orange and rust, midnight blue, greens and browns (the blue plate is sometimes referred to as pattern # N1096 and the orange one as # N2077).

David Spain's "Noritake Collectibles A to Z," features this plate on page 228.

USES: Given their exceptional quality and condition, the pair is suitable for display as a work of decorative art and/or for use on special occasions. Sometimes referred to as lemon servers or nappies, these highly collectible Noritake handled dishes are a great gift idea. They are handy for serving lemon wedges, bon bons, mints, candy, nuts, sushi, etc.

ORIGIN: Of Japanese (Asian, Oriental) derivation, most old Noritake collectibles were designed at the Morimura Brothers Trading Company in New York City, then produced at the Nippon Toki Kaisha, Ltd. ("the Company that makes Japan's Finest China") factory in Noritake, Japan for export to Western (Occidental) markets.

Item ID: RL-NoritakePlate-0149
