This sterling souvenir spoon from the Art Nouveau era features elaborate silversmithing - a repousse and chased work lily of the valley handle, complete with stem and leaves, and related leaf design on the backside. It is in very good condition, has “Los Angeles” etched in the bowl in an ornate script, “RW&S” (an early R. Wallace & Sons Mfg. Co. mark ) and “sterling” on the neck.

Robert Wallace founded his silversmith business in Wallingford, Connecticut ca 1833. This City of the Angels spoon appears hand wrought and has an aesthetic design. Similar Wallace spoons date to 1891 and Frank Whiting Silver introduced a similar pattern in 1890, so this one probably also dates to the late Victorian ca 1890.

A dainty spoon, it is about 3 ¾” long by ¾” at its widest and could be a master open salt spoon, a demitasse coffee spoon or a birth month spoon. May's birth flower is the lily of the valley, a fragrant flower that is native to the European continent. The flower has become symbolic of the Virgin Mary because because its white flowers suggestive chastity and purity. It also symbolizes humility and sweetness. This vintage spoon is a great gift idea for people with the qualities it symbolizes, for those born in May and for those named "Susan" (or a variation thereof), since the name is from an ancient word for "lily" - one that can be traced to Hebrew, Persian and Egyptian words.
