Collectors call this vase's design the Man on Camel, Desert Landscape, and/or Mary and Joseph pattern (in keeping with the Holy Family’s post Christmas flight into Egypt to protect Jesus from the slaughter of the Holy Innocents). Designed in the early 1900s, the hand painted container depicts two travelers with a camel walking though a barren valley at at sunset or sunrise, with scattered palm trees and a pyramid along the 360 degree landscape.

MARK: green “Noritaké” over the Maruki symbol (aka the Komaru symbol & spider mark), “Made in Japan” (JVP 228) with Japanese / Chinese characters in red (DHS #15.01). Nippon Toki Kaisha, Ltd. registered the antique mark in London in 1908 and used it on items exported to the UK (and elsewhere) during the early 1900s, perhaps even into the Art Deco era (cf. JVP's 2005 book, pg 102).

CONDITION: Excellent (no chips, cracks, crazing; light fading).

SIZE: About 4 ˝” tall.

COLORS: Gold trim, midnight "Prussian" blue, orange, peach, gray, tan, brown, black, beige, sand and green.

* Karry-leeanne Fisher, in "Noritake for Australia and New Zealand A Collector's Journey of Discovery" (2006), devotes an entire chapter this “M & J Desert Scene” pattern.

Item ID: RL-0445
