Playing card suit ashtrays sets such this were popular in the early 1900s, made and sold by a number of porcelain producers. Indeed, the lustreware set offered here no doubt rode on the coattails of highly collectible Art Deco Noritake sets. Each of the four dishes within it is in the shape of one of the four suits in a deck of cards: a heart, club, spade and diamond.

Today this reminder of the Roaring Twenties would make a great gift for tobacciana collectors and card game enthusiast (be it Bridge, Gin Rummy, Pinochle, Poker, Blackjack, Slapjack, Spades, Spoons, Go Fish, War, etc.). Additionally, collectors who own similar sets might enjoy adding this to their collection, to give it depth and perspective.

MARK: “Made in Japan” appears in red on each tray and in a dark blue or black on the bottom of the box, along with the number “N 51426 4-PS.”

SIZES: The ashtrays vary slightly in size, yet each is about 3” x 3” or so; they all fit together in the square box which is 5.75” x 5.75.”

COLORS: The box has a very dark blue-gray (nearly black) background with red and blue spiral circles in rows, forming a nice diagonal pattern across it. The dishes have a bone china white bottom, black trim, and hand painted luster interior. The club is a shiny periwinkle blue, the diamond is a shiny peach, the heart is a shiny cream, and the spade, a shiny white.

CONDITION: Good Vintage Condition, with no cracks or repairs, yet the lustre has bubbles, and the porcelain is uneven, with manufacturing variations (as common with Japanese novelty items of the era and type). The box is in good shape – just beginning to split a little here and there, yet still intact.
