MARK: Noritake magenta red “M in wreath” Hand Painted, Made in Japan mark registered by Nippon Toki Kaisha, Ltd. in 1918.
CONDITION: the dish is in excellent vintage condition (no chips, cracks, crazing or repairs). The colors are vibrant and the gold has very little (if any) fading.
SIZE: About 11 1/2” across from handle to handle and 1 1/2” tall and 5 1/2" wide.
COLORS: bone china white with gold trim; the cityscape is a rich orange and yellow, with brown, blue, red and yellow details (sometimes referred to as pattern # N2077).
David Spain's "Noritake Collectibles A to Z," features a similar item on page 228.
ORIGIN: of Japanese (Asian, Oriental) derivation, most pre-WWII Noritake collectibles were designed at the Morimura Brothers trading company in New York City, then made and hand decorated by employees at the Nippon Toki Kaisha, Ltd. ("the Company that makes Japan's Finest China") factory in Noritake, Japan for export to Western (Occidental) markets.
FUN FACTS: Class-conscious Victorian diners considered celery an elegant, exotic food, one requiring a special serving dish designed to present its leafy stalks prominently on the dinner table.
